What's your current desktop/notebook? (specs)

Hii,

I wondered what your system is like. I'm interested in hardware. It's my hobby to see the evolution of hardware. If you see the evolution in games we made from 2000 till now. It's impressive! But also other things are impressive. Science have enjoyed computers. Science have grown thanks to computers.

Anyway, what I want to hear from you are the specs. It doesn't have to be detailed, keep it simple.

I will start:
CPU: Pentium 4 3.0Ghz - still single core :(
RAM: 1GB of DDR Ram
HDD: 320 GB of space
GFX: ATI 9800Pro 128mb dedicated video ram, got an upgrade recently though, I received a ATI 1950GT from a friend who has build his own computer.
LCD: 17" (1280x1024)

I don't have an impressive desktop at all, it can crash every minute to be honest :P :S

Well, I mentioned this on the other thread, but I'll go into more details here:

8710w HP Workstation
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo
RAM: 4GB DDR2
HDD: 160GB
GFX: NVIDIA Quadro FX 1600M (512MB VRAM)
LCD: 17" (1920x1200)

My one complaint is the small hard drive, but I think I can manage with it for a few years before I get an external TB hard drive.

I thought I would include my previous hardware to offer another perspective as to how much technology/comparable product lines can change between computer upgrades.

What a systems you guys have :O ?! I'm still running on a PC like yours in 2004, 5 years ago! Only my CPU is faster, but that's about it...

Neewatkins and Bogan are you students? Do you have to pay your PC yourself or does your parents do?
What do you do with your PC by the way? I can't imagine you have such a system to check mails or write some documents in word. I mean 10GB or DDR2 Ram isn't less, same as your graphics card...

Actually, that exactly what I do with my system. I mean, I watch movies on my snazzy screen and burn home movies and stuff, but I don't do anything too intensive. I am looking into learning a little more about Adobe Photoshop and Dreamweaver and I think this computer will be a great way to do so.

As for the cost, well, I work a LOT during the school year. I am a student but I'm have a part time job at which I work around 20 hours and always looking for side gigs to earn some more cash. Ultimately though, my parents and I share the cost of the laptop because they're helping me pay for college as much they can...

I look at my laptop as an investment though. I got it at a wonderful price and it comes with a 4 year warranty (3 years from HP and 1 year from AMEX), meaning I won't need to worry about it dying for a while.

I'm lovin my Hp Dv9000z 1,700 dollars and a few set backs but still fun to own :)

I'm running a fairly basic Core i7 desktop that I just built this summer. It's pretty sweet. It's a shame there aren't many good games to play on it right now. I'm definitely looking forward to next year.

CPU: Intel Core i7 920 (overclocked to 3.8Ghz)
RAM: 6GB OCZ triple channel kit
GPU: EVGA nvidia GTX 285 2GB FTW edition
MB: Asus P6T

Woot, you guys realy have some systems, it makes me sick. The one that needs the power, hasn't the power. I work on level designs, which is pretty intensive for any system. I simply can't afford a system like yours. I should cost over 1500EUR here, I'm sure of that!

How many second from black screen to an operating windows? It must be blazing fast with a SSD!

PS: I'm a hardware fanboy, so I realy know much about it. The case is amazing! I've seen it once @ overclocking contest, the blue lights, the design, ... one word: extremely sexy! :P

Can you say some specs, it must be a beast if it costs 1700USD... I realy like the smooth design of a dv9000. HP thought well about this one.

Yea, its still a notebook so your not gonna get desktop performance but it has:

AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-68
4 GB DDR2
250 GB SATA II HDD
100 GB SATA II HDD
Nvidia 8400M video card
17" 1680X1050 HD screen
HDMI + many other outputs
Upgraded Battery

It has everything that I could have gotten on the laptop at the time. Even with the upgraded battery I still get only an 1.3 hours on maximum performance. lol :) I love my laptop, its been way powerful for all the coding I do, and if even plays games like Halo, Half Life 2, and CSS pretty well.
And it still gets horrible battery life :P

EDIT:
I forgot to mention that it runs Vista Ultimate 64-bit

Well, maybe battery looks horrible, today. But if we are 2010 or 2011 we will say battery life from any notebook in 2009 just sucked, believe me.

I know notebook HDD are expensive, so was memory and the high resolution. These days memory has become very cheap, you got 4gb or 6gb kits for less then $100. I know in 2004 I paid 120EUR for 1Gb of DDR RAM and that was desktop RAM, so it should be cheaper then notebook RAM. Cool you have a HDMI port!! You are working with an 12, 8 or 6 cell battery? It's a known problem, after one year of recharing the battery, the battery life goes down a lot.

8 Cell battery, on my R3000z laptop (from compaq) i was working on a 12 cell battery, but with this laptop they didnt give me that option, only a "High Capacity 8-cell" which I did.

I mean, im not holding the battery life against the laptop, I mean what can I expect from such a large very un-desktop-like laptop.

You have two notebooks? A compaq r3000z and a HP dv9000? Is 8 or 12 cell stil in the case of the notebook or does it stick out?

You have a desktop too? In the house? Most families have a desktop (with notebook(s)) but not only notebooks. Am I wrong and so old-fashioned?

Nope, I have a desktop too, one I built though.
The compaq is 5 or so years old, still has a 64-bit processor though :P

But the 12-cell on the r3000z doesn't stick out, it fits flush like the stock 6 cell.

I just searched amazon and it seems that I could get an aftermarket 12-cell for the dv9000z, but it would stick out and prop up the laptop.

So you have 3 computers in your household?

Five years isn't old mate. Mine is from 2003, though I upgraded few things: CPU, RAM, HDD and GFX but that doesn't mean everything is replaced. Some parts are still 6 to 7 years old.

Yea. I mean I only got a new and powerful laptop because I needed it for school, still would love to have a netbook so I don't have to drag this thing around with me lol.

My desktop is back at my families house, as well as the r3000z.

I didn't bring em to my apartment.

Well, I would be glad if I had all your stuff. You are just entering because of the HP mini?

I can think of thousand reasons why to win:
- Finaly a worthy system to work on
- School should go better (I do level designing, which is very computer intensive)
- Portability, I wouldn't have to travel with external drives anymore every week.
- Larger HDD then my desktop one. I need space!
- No complaining from my brother saying it doesn't run the games.
- etc.

and then lots of other things I just like on the notebook(s):
- Nice blueray drive
- HDMI port
- Beautifull design
- Touch buttons
- Lots of storage
- Portability
- etc.

I can think of many more reasons, but this topic isn't about reasons why to win.

Haha, no. I'm entering because I want it. I could also need it. Use this laptop i have now as a desktop, and the ones I'd win for my everyday use. I'd also like a Blu-ray drive on my laptop.

But yea, this isn't about why to win.
I never win anything, so I'm hoping maybe I can this time. :)

I worked a summer job and then spent all my money on a computer :P I am currently in college.

The reason there is so much RAM is because of a deal I was offered for it, but I doubt that I actually use it to the fullest just yet. I would like to get into some CS4 but, though I have the system we cannot upgrade our exceedingly old, unsupported version of Photoshop ( I think it is v3 or something for OS 9.)
I perform several of the daily simple tasks: email, web, word processing, Hulu. However, I also love playing games, and the system works beautifully.

On the other hand, the PowerBook I have freezes at random. Go figure : )

I see that many people have entered the HP contest. I wish everyone luck!

I can't understand that people buy systems of 1500USD+ to just go some surfing, word processing and email. :O
I don't know why you should do that, even if your parents pay your computer. Sorry, but it's hard to see people with the best performaning systems if you have crap yourself and defently if you need it for college. Not some word but level design.

Lol, are you laughing with me? Coding can be done on a Pentium 3 if you want to.
If you pay it yourself, why did you spend that much money to do such basics things. A 800USD desktop/notebook could also do the job perfectly fine. I'm not complaining, but it's just silly, spending money without a reason...

This can still be done with a machine under 1000USD you know... As long you have 2GB or 3GB of RAM you're fine, unless you have files over 300MB, but I guess that isn't the case :D

Maybe. Why bother getting something thats gonna have an if... When I can get something I know will work. Plus I can do tons of stuff on top of using those programs, like watch a movie, be online, etc.

It's funny to see how the consumer markt act. In the year 2004 you needed a highend system to do that. Computers have become extremely fast. I mean if you don't play games any low-end graphics card will do these days. Running Windows Aero interface, watching blueray movies, etc.
It will be a problem in the future to sell mid-end computers, because all household computers will just run fine with low-end parts. :P

I'm not saying you did bought 'wrong'. I'm just saying, with a lot less you could be on the same track, if you know what I mean. I like your choice, the dv9000 is a wonderful notebook though!
