I continue to be surprised these days by how many young people date without regard to their "future" i.e. getting married etc. Many peeps seem fine with the notion that they are just having fun, or filling a temporary need or whatev.
So I'm wondering what other young people out there consider to be the most important things to look for when choosing or staying with a long-term or short-term bf or gf?

The most important issue here is how comfortable you feel around the other person, how much the oh respects your views and how sticks by you, the rest might be important at first but as time goes by it loses importance: looks. believe you me gets boring...

Yea, I'd have to agree with you on that Roraima, the most important thing is how comfortable you are with the other person. What's the point in having a gf or bf if you think you always have to put on an act to please the person?

I'm actually really against the whole "date-around" philosophy a lot of college student subscribe to. I guess I'm old-fashioned, but I feel like it's important that someone you're in a relationship with is someone you can imagine spending the rest of your life with. I didn't date at all throughout high school and was lucky enough to find the right person towards the end of my first semester in college.
I think it's important to make sure that you're friends with your boyfriend or girlfriend before you take your relationship to the next level. Hooking-up is a terrible invention :P

Dating around is fair enough, because you can't really go around starting a relationship with the notion of staying together forever. You have to start the relationship and get to really know the person, before you can make any plans. They may seem perfect to you at first, but turn out to be not the one for you. To be fair, it works the other way round as well. You could start a relationship with someone you thought was alright, and they turn out to be the best thing that ever happened to you.

Have enough similarities to get you talking, but enough differences to keep the talks interesting.
I'm already married, but when I was dating I looked for that "I'm so lucky I'm dating them" feeling.I guess I was always looking for something big, and grew bored easily.
And family, if they're important enough they meet my family, and if either side doesn't like them or they're not compatible then it isn't meant to be.Everyone has their items that they won't compromise on, and that's mine.

You must feel comfortable, like roraima said. You must be able to make fun. Go to placing the other one wants to, sometimes even if you don't realy want to. The same he or she has to do with you.
You don't have to try to look interested, but don't just don't hate it. Be yourself!

I think that through dating around you get to meet the person that you're gonna eventually marry. I mean, if you didn't date around, and I married the first person I got together with, I personally would have doubts of whether or not she was the right one for me since I really didn't try things out LOL.
I do think that being comfortable is very important tho!
