Our prayers go out for the Fort Hood families of the November 5, 2009 shooting.

There is a small detail that most media outlets, and the ARMY, are not saying, which is that the shooter at Foot Hood, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, screamed "Allahu Akbar" before opening fire on fellow US soldiers.

Earlier today, Drudge Report linked to this AP article on Yahoo:

It's quite interesting that the US military, always careful with their portrayal of minorities, females, and Muslims, has refused to comment on this fact, and the mainstream media is also ignoring it for other politically correct reasons. But while the story is being reported as a "psychiatrist who snapped, because he was being deployed to Iraq", the fact remains that he was a Muslim who screamed the token phrase that all Muslim terrorists scream before exploding, or terrorizing, etc.

Was he secretly recruited by Al Qaeda before this event? Probably not. But there is much more to this story than is seemingly being reported, and the following weeks will surely demand the details.

Update: apparently Obama is getting tons of criticism for his response after the tragedy.

In his first public appearance after the shooting, it took a good 5 minutes for him to even mention it:

Anyway, very weird situation this week... so sad.

The mainstream media was not ignoring the racial implications of the shootings purely out of "politically correct reasons." The media wanted to get the story as correct as possible. Investigations take time.

The New York Times reported yesterday that Federal investigators have ruled out the possibility that Hasan was directed by extremists.

This will undoubtedly have an impact in the progress of the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. The issue lies in the Army's race relations. Until more facts about Hasan's extremist relations are dug up and revealed, these quick-fire allegations are irresponsible.

Perhaps, but few reported that he screamed "Allahu Akbar" before opening fire, which is a pretty big detail to ignore in reporting the event.

But yes, the tragedy might be largely due the Army's political correctness (not the media's...), although one could argue that the Army's recent procedures regarding race and treatment of Muslim soldiers are largely the result of undue criticism in the mainstream media.

[Senator] Lieberman said preliminary evidence suggested that Mr. Hasan had denounced the U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. "In the U.S. Army, this is not a matter of constitutional freedom of speech," the senator said. "If Hasan was showing signs, saying to people that he had become an Islamist extremist, the U.S. Army has to have zero tolerance. He should have been gone."

There's no precise, internationally accepted definition of terrorism or who qualifies as a terrorist. One 1988 study identified 109 definitions for terrorism, and it's a safe bet there are now many more. The U.S. Code contains several classifications of varying scope. Perhaps the most wide-ranging is the one the government uses to exclude possible immigrants, wherein a terrorist is anyone who uses an "explosive, firearm, or other weapon or dangerous device (other than for mere personal monetary gain), with intent to endanger … the safety or one or more individuals or to cause substantial damage to property."
