Nazis were world war 2, but they were already active in the late 30's. War didn't started in 1940, it started much earlier, but it wasn't visible for the entire world. It's not about this was a good country or this one evil. It's because of a few men, not a country.

I still can't believe that the U.S. nuked Japan... twice.

Yes, but the late 30s is still well after World War I. And my comment wasn't necessarily reflecting the good and evil stance. It was more of a inquiry as to what it must have been like as a country to have been so demoralized and regarded by the world as a terrible place. For along time I'm sure people associated all German people with Nazis, so to carry that weight on their shoulders must have been intolerable.
But that's not to say that anyone wasn't happy that the war itself ended. There were many, many Germans who helped their fellow countrymen out of danger or took a stance against the Germans, and still many more who were a part of the German army without believing in what the Fuhrer believed.

Soldiers didn't think Germany as if they were all nazis. Never heard the nobody-land story? It really happened. They celebrated christmas with the 'enemy'.

A lot of people thought of Germany as the enemy, and maybe it's just the States but there are a lot of misconceptions and that is certainly one of them. Instances of neutrality and peace amongst enemies aren't something I'm arguing against. But it can't be denied that the image of Germany certainly wasn't helped by WWII.

And think of the national sense of shame that occurred afterwards. It's illegal to deny the Holocaust over there, there are a lot of reasons and meanings behind that.

In Europe, Germany has rebuild his status again. It's one of the greatest nations in Europe (if not, the greatest). With 80 millions inhabitants, strong economic, good cars :P
I don't blame Germany, I blame the few people.

@Devenox: Can you elaborate on the 'nobody-land story'? That sounds really interesting.
I really want to spend some time traveling around Europe, especially in France and Britain. Their culture and architecture is the closest I know of to the 18th and 19th century world, and it would provide some great experiences for writing time pieces. Plus, after watching Green Street Hooligans, I want to see football hooligans for myself.

French and German soldier were unhappy to live like this. They knew they weren't the enemies, but their boss was. They celebrated christmas together, because they weren't real enemies.

It's memorialized in a film called "Joyeux Noel" I believe.Fighting was suspended to enjoy the festivities surrounding Christmas.

That's right, but there're some more movies around about this 'incident'. Google and you will find some more information.

I remember learning about the incident in history class, but I don't recall it being called "no-body land story".

Yeah, sorry, I don't know what the correct term is for the land between the two enemies. (blush)

I remember learning about that in German class.
What an amazing story. I hear the two sides stopped fighting and even played football together in observation of the holiday. How confusing it must have been when the fighting restarted.Posted 2 years ago # -
Maybe they weren't fighting the first days after christmas. Probably the wait when something happened, but the enemy, did just the same. Waiting.
