If you allow proportional thumbnails in the posts, the thumbnails of images that aren't perfectly square look much better. As I noted, I can control that on my site under Settings, Media. I think you can too, but I don't know if it would conflict with the plugin you're using.</p>

We have it set to exact 100x100 dimensions so that our layout stays consistent, otherwise it would look really sloppy if each article had a different sized thumbnail - we are using the "Get the Image" plugin by Justin Adlock. It chooses a photo automatically from the post and zooms in and then crops to the dimensions that you set - usually if it zooms properly then it will simply crop out a section of the scene instead of distorting ratios, but it ain't perfect.

You should be able to do that by going to Settings, Media and unchecking the box that says "Crop thumbnails to exact dimensions." At least, that's the way it works on my WP ver. 2.8.4.
