It's a perfect fit, and already all set up. So, I really don't need responses telling me how poor my job market is, and/or how limited the opportunities are.

I know most employers don't pay much attention to minors, and they're really not a big deal. However, I am being asked to declare mine before Thanksgiving, and i'm a bit stuck.

Some people may say this is a fair amount of information to process, but I would greatly appreciate any sort of feedback!

Political Science: The program claims there's a lot of overlap, and that it prepares one for a career in Journalism. I am worried that the subject may bore me. I am not overly bored by politics, though they don't exactly excite me either.

Anthropology: I have to focus on either Biological/Physical, Social/Cultural, Theoretical, or Applied Anthropology. Depending on what I sign up for, this could end up being relevant, yet that's mostly speculation.

English and Textual Studies: My English 104 teacher told me I ought to consider studying literature professionally. It seems as if it would probably be helpful, as reading and writing go hand in hand.

Fine Arts: I adored Art History; except I fear that this is one of those fluffy subjects, which really isn't going to do much for me. Hence, I would be taking this purely for my own enjoyment.

Philosophy: This bears a similar problem to Art History, only it might be a bit more beneficial, because it could help build argumentative, critical thinking, and analytical skills.
Anonymous on "Religion Extremists" http://forum.collegetimes.us/topic/religion-extremists#post-1737 Thu, 21 Oct 2010 02:12:46 +0000 Anonymous 1737@http://forum.collegetimes.us/
Im writing a research paper for my eng 101 class and the topic i've chosen is against religion extremism when it deals with putting someone's life in danger. Anne Altman, a managing director at IBM, is responsible for the company's sales to its biggest customer: the U.S. government. Her secret weapon for multitasking? I am finally a senior at the University of North Texas and began my freshman year working 50hrs a week and taking 12 hours of school. I have been working and going to school full time for 4 years now, and I have a 3.0 GPA. After a few semesters, you really end up figuring out what works for you, usually at the expense of your GPA or sub-par work performance. Right now, my "ideal" work/school balance is as follows: Working 4 days one week, 5 days the next; this includes working every Saturday. For school, I am taking 15 hours this semester and need 15 more in the spring to graduate. So I average around 35 hours per week and take 15 hours of upper level business classes. Nice, huh?

Here is the kicker - you will eventually go INSANE! I am a very laid-back person, but I have had a tremendous time dealing with the stress that comes from everything. I work at a retail corporation in a middle management role. The paychecks and experience are great, the stress is horrible. I would recommend getting a job that does not require too much critical thinking and that does not carry enormous expectations. It is very hard not to take home work issues with you. My job expectations are difficult to fulfill working 40+ hours per week, let alone 35.

With school, you have to make it the #1 priority over everything else. If you cannot do that or are not yet willing to do that, you are wasting your time. Save your money and wait til you are ready to commit. I have had to drop many classes and have had to do a few over as well because of the enormous weight of it all (There were also two semesters when I had to drop classes due to a torn ACL and a death in the family). Your major and your GPA will make or break the beginning of your professional life, seriously. Your GPA is your baby.

Essentially, you cannot afford to have much of a social life, if any. I rarely see my family and friends. I basically spend time with my girlfriend (which I also do not recommend if you are working and going to school full-time unless you both are seriously involved) and go out once or twice as week, usually at the expense of sleep. I end up having a few hours a week to do some fun things, but I end up feeling guilty about it because I could be using that time to study! I have not been on a vacation since I started school. There literally is no time.

I would say that working and going to school full time has its benefits. You get valuable experience and a paycheck to take care of financial obligations. You are also able to apply your education to your current job responsibilities. Some companies even pay some of your tuition bill! The negatives include constant stress, depression, poorer health, loss of social life and weakened relationships, less opportunity to enjoy the best years of your life. Is it worth it? I would say NO. I only work because I have refused to take out monster private loans in order to pay for living expenses. As I am in midst of my senior year, the stress is really getting to me and I may die soon. I am considering taking out a small private loan and working part-time at 20 hours a week. 15 hours a week plus reduced stress sounds great right about... NOW! :)
Anonymous on "Questions from a High School Student" http://forum.collegetimes.us/topic/questions-from-a-high-school-student#post-1615 Tue, 24 Aug 2010 12:46:41 +0000 Anonymous 1615@http://forum.collegetimes.us/
Hello I am currently partaking in the class, Stats AP and was wondering if anyone could answer a few questions regarding their high school and college experience.

Which classes did you take or would have taken in high school in order to help you in your major?

Did you feel prepared for college after high school?

What advice would you give to help a high school student prepare for college?

Is there anything you would have done differently in high school to farther prepare yourself for college?

Which college(s) did you attend?

How many years did you attend college?

Did you enjoy your college experience?

Which college classes did you take for your major?

Is there anything you would want to do differently in college?

I hope you will answer as many questions as you can and thank you for your time.

Much Appreciated,

Tyler Ouzts
Anonymous on "Friends With Benefits?" http://forum.collegetimes.us/topic/friends-with-benefits#post-1611 Fri, 20 Aug 2010 17:26:05 +0000 Anonymous 1611@http://forum.collegetimes.us/
Pretty simple. School starts again in a couple of weeks, and I'm starting to rethink the classes I have chosen to take this semester. I'm going to be a sophomore at the College of Charleston in SC. I spent my first year experimenting with a ton of classes that I liked but just didn't seem right to major in.

So here I am: so stuck and frustrated that I've decided to ask strangers for their opinions. Not looking for you to decide for me, since you don't know me (obviously). But just have an unbiased outlook.

Ok, here's the majors (and minors) I'm considering. Don't worry about how many credits everything is, because I'm fairly certain I can fit it all into the next 3 (I hope to God) years.

-Communications, with a concentration in Media Studies- Such a vast major. I kind of want to have a job prospect when I graduate, and I hear that so many people with this major get kind of stuck later on, for whatever reason. But, I like to write, and I'll be able to take a few writing classes. Plus, one of my dream jobs is to work for a magazine some day (not necessarily writing, which is what gets me stuck-what about being a creative director or something?). Anyway, this major confuses me because I feel like there are too many and too little things to do with it at the same time.

-Arts Management, which I'll have to find another thing to major or minor in with- Pretty much so I could hopefully someday work at a museum or gallery or something and have both an arts education and a little business knowledge. But I'm not looking forward to the business classes I'd have to take. I'm not a big fan of math. But the other classes look good. And I like the prospects of this one.

-Art History- Probably to go along with Arts Management. I took Asian Art History last semester, and it was my favorite class and my hardest class at the same time. I love learning about the art but I hated memorizing everything, which I have a feeling will be a lot of this major. I think it'd be worth it, though, because I like it. What are some prospects with this, though?

-Historic Preservation- Another dream of mine is to own an antique and architectural salvage store. This would help with that. BUT I'm not sure if I should just major in Art History because I could take the same exact classes and have a broader major title. Any advice?

-Studio Art- Would love to minor in this, because I'd love to have an art background (even if it's small) and I love photography and would concentrate in that. I think this would open some doors for me.

OK, that's enough of my typing. If you read all of that, thank you so much. Please help me out and give me your opinions. See, I'm not completely lost as for what to do. It's just that I have so many ideas it's hard to choose one.

And since this is a long post, I might as well make it longer: Here's things I enjoy in life, so you get a better idea for who I am: travel, writing, photography, fashion, antiques, cities, art, books (and design of books- hello, publishing?), and that's all I can think of.

Ok that's enough. Just remember I can do basically any major and minor combo that would be beneficial. I'm even open to double minoring or something. Thanks again, so much.
Anonymous on "I want to know the GPA's of people who applied to UT Austin and got CAP instead?" http://forum.collegetimes.us/topic/i-want-to-know-the-gpas-of-people-who-applied-to-ut-austin-and-got-cap-instead#post-1564 Sun, 01 Aug 2010 10:14:15 +0000 Anonymous 1564@http://forum.collegetimes.us/
And if u can give me the average high school GPA needed to be offered CAP?
Anonymous on "How to work full-time and go to school full-time?" http://forum.collegetimes.us/topic/how-to-work-full-time-and-go-to-school-full-time#post-1524 Wed, 14 Jul 2010 10:20:00 +0000 Anonymous 1524@http://forum.collegetimes.us/
I am in my second year of college and going to school full-time without working is no longer an option for me. I got a job a month ago that is full-time and I am working day shift right now. In Fall I plan on taking 3 online classes (13 credits, two of which are really easy) and one in person class at night (language). The class is on Mondays and Wednesdays. On Mondays I will have 30 minutes time to get to school from work and I have Wednesdays off work so I won't have any troubles there. If I can do Fall quarter successfully I plan on switching to night shift at my job (which is 8pm to 6:30am 4 days a week). So basically I would go to work then drive to school and study until my first class and then go classes and be home and in bed around 12.

I guess what I want is pointers on how to make this easier (or possible). Scheduling I can pull it off but it will require immense focus and I guess I'm just looking for somebody who is doing this, or has done it who can tell me what it is that helped them do it or why it didn't work out for them and what they could do differently.

I plan on using my days off work to "catch up" on my studies and school work. The first quarter should be pretty easy, I'll study my language class 1 hour a day on work days and do all my other courses on my 3 days off (which I would have more than enough time to do that with). I just need to start planning out and preparing for how I'm going to tackle Winter and Spring quarter successfully.
Anonymous on "NEED HELP" http://forum.collegetimes.us/topic/need-help#post-1502 Sat, 26 Jun 2010 05:54:06 +0000 Anonymous 1502@http://forum.collegetimes.us/
Try the Demon tool ,it may help you .
Anonymous on "Stand Up Take Action 2010.We need you…" http://forum.collegetimes.us/topic/stand-up-take-action-2010we-need-you%e2%80%a6#post-1481 Tue, 08 Jun 2010 00:30:38 +0000 Anonymous 1481@http://forum.collegetimes.us/
Globally 1.73 Million people stood up against poverty in 2009, a Guinness World Record!

Let us break this record in 2010!

Be the voice for the millions of poor people living across India.

~ Aamir Khan stood up against poverty! ~

~ AR Rahman stood up against poverty! ~

~ Rahul Dravid stood up against poverty! ~

~ Rahul Bose stood up against poverty! ~

~ Kiran Bedi stood up against poverty! ~

It is Time for You to STAND UP AGAINST POVERTY NOW!
Join us on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/unmcampaignINDIA and check out the photo album section for the event pictures.

Follow us on Twitter at http://twitter.com/unmcampaignIND
Anonymous on "LMFAO Parody About Graduating College (...and not getting a job)" http://forum.collegetimes.us/topic/lmfao-parody-about-graduating-college-and-not-getting-a-job#post-1473 Thu, 03 Jun 2010 08:41:02 +0000 Anonymous 1473@http://forum.collegetimes.us/
Check it out, it's quite funny...and helpful: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PrIe5Kabcs
Anonymous on "NEED HELP" http://forum.collegetimes.us/topic/need-help#post-1469 Fri, 28 May 2010 01:08:53 +0000 Anonymous 1469@http://forum.collegetimes.us/
Time to serve the society. a little happy and somewhat upset.
