My classes are more advanced course, pre-calc, physics, and classes at community college. For my senior year I'm taking AP Biology, classes at the local community college, and classes such as those. I do average in all of my classes but I'm hoping that they will notice the level of difficulty. My GPA is around a 3.3-3.4, I know its low. As of now my highest ACT score is a 23, and Im taking it as many more times as I can. I volunteer at the hospital and I'm a third year varsity swimmer for my school, I also participate in Big Brothers/ Big Sisters and other various volunteer events. What are my chances of getting into DePaul University? I also live in Ohio, so I'll be applying out of state. I dont know if this makes a difference or not.
Anonymous on "Great summer opportunity for college-bound students" http://forum.collegetimes.us/topic/great-summer-opportunity-for-college-bound-students#post-1520 Mon, 12 Jul 2010 14:05:37 +0000 Anonymous 1520@http://forum.collegetimes.us/
Hi there,

I'm a Princeton University sophomore interning with FUNCEDESCRI, a Guatemalan non-profit organization that fights malnutrition in Mayan farming communities. Since there is no guarantee of my loan application being approved, I was meaning to apply for my student visa only after securing a loan source. I was considering applying for the Sallie Mae Smart Option Student Loan plan, but the application itself there, however, requires me to submit a copy of my student visa or CIS form. Now, there's no point of getting a student visa if I'm not even sure if I'm going to get the loan, and for another I have no idea what a CIS form is.
What do I do, help please?! :(

(For those of you who have read my previous thread, this is kind of a subset of that)

Thanks, once again.

niyonta.nch@gmail.com
Anonymous on "Admission and Transfer- International" http://forum.collegetimes.us/topic/admission-and-transfer-international#post-1466 Wed, 26 May 2010 00:12:51 +0000 Anonymous 1466@http://forum.collegetimes.us/
Hey guys, I'm faced with a problem here and would really appreciate any advice or suggestions you can give me.
I'll give a brief description of my situation and get to my question.
Thing is, I'm an international student- a foreign resident- and I got accepted to two colleges (Sarah Lawrence and DePauw University) and am wait listed by two others- Bryn Mawr and Mount Holyoke. The thing is that I really want to attend Bryn Mawr, but just in case I don't make it out of the wait list and into the college, I don't want to let go of Sarah Lawrence. This is important because it's crucial for me to go off abroad and start college immediately instead of taking a gap year (because of petty family problems and the likes). Besides, with the financial aid and scholarship Sarah Lawrence has offered me, I would need to pay around $20,000 yearly, which is a little too much for my family. So, I would need to take a loan for SLC (I'm thinking of applying to Sallie Mae for the loan). Bryn Mawr, on the other hand, if they take me, they'll give me full-need aid. Now the problem is that both BMC and MHC will get to know if there are any spaces available only at the end of June or even later, while SLC is asking me to send in the necessary paperwork to complete processing my admission by 1st June.
Now, my question is, once I submit my I-20 form and get a student visa for Sarah Lawrence, can I later cancel it off and transfer to BMC or MHC?
If anyone has a well informed answer, do let me know. Please reply soon, I'm sort of running out of time. Thanks!
Here's my email address just in case- niyonta.nch@gmail.com
Anonymous on "One-Year Course of Study: Accelerate your opportunities" http://forum.collegetimes.us/topic/one-year-course-of-study-accelerate-your-opportunities#post-1439 Mon, 26 Apr 2010 22:43:01 +0000 Anonymous 1439@http://forum.collegetimes.us/
When students begin to weigh their MBA options, they must consider the opportunity costs associated with full-time study. You are forgetting the fact that while chinese population overwhelm the US, the percentage of those students in China applying for American schools, or even considering going to college, is a fraction of those in the US. In fact, if you have good test scores and you bring diversity to the University, i would say you have even a greater chance than an average american with your test scores. But I think these people are your main competitors. The admissions office at MIT will probably want to admit at least 1 student from Portugal. (Why? Because admissions offices at places like MIT love to be able to throw out statistics like, "Over 50 countries are represented in our undergraduate student body." All they have to do is admit one student from Portugal to then say it is "represented.") This school year MIT actually admitted 3 students from Portugal (see Link 3 below).

My general advice to you--
If there's still time to apply to other schools, go ahead and apply to them.
If not, then just sit tight, cross your fingers, go offer some gifts to the gods, and wait. If you get in, be glad and be ready for four amazing and incredibly challenging years. And if not, don't take it personally--it doesn't mean that you didn't try hard enough. (If you do get in, remember that MIT is the kind of place that makes its own students wonder if they've tried hard enough.)

Best,
Gabriel

Link 1. http://web.mit.edu/registrar/stats/yrpts/index.html
Link 2. http://web.mit.edu/iso/stats_09-10/general.shtml
Link 3. http://web.mit.edu/registrar/stats/geo/index.html
Link 4. I used to work at the International Students Office at MIT, and I was quite surprised when I discovered how few internationals are admitted as undergrads. Take 2009-2010 (see link 2 below), for example. Only 32 students from China were admitted out of an entire undergraduate student body of 4,257 students (3,601 of whom were Americans). Now, if we take those two numbers--3,601 versus 32--and divide by the populations of the U.S. and China, respectively, you'll get a picture of just how few spots there are for China relative to its size. I have never seen the statistics on how many students actually apply as undergrads from China, but I imagine that the number must be high. I taught in China one summer, and whereas, in the U.S., there are lots of people who don't know about MIT (but who do know about Harvard, Yale, and Princeton), in China, it seemed that every student knew about MIT and many dreamed of going there. So I would guess that of all the various undergraduate pools of students at MIT, the most selective is the undergrad Chinese pool.

Post continued below...
Anonymous on "MIT acceptance chances" http://forum.collegetimes.us/topic/mit-acceptance-chances#post-1350 Wed, 17 Mar 2010 00:46:12 +0000 Anonymous 1350@http://forum.collegetimes.us/
Hi,

I'm an MIT student who has completed three years of undergraduate studies. I came across your post today while investigating something completely different, but since you seem so anxious, I decided to write you.

First of all, congratulations on your test scores. They're even higher than mine. :-)

It looks like your application is quite strong, and I hope that you have applied to other schools besides MIT. Something I tell people regularly is that the college admissions process at the top universities is somewhat arbitrary. The fact is that places like MIT receive far more qualified applicants than they actually have space for. So what do they do? Well, they can either increase the number of undergraduate places so they can admit everyone who they think is "qualified," which is something that doesn't seem to be happening at MIT over the last 10 years (see link 1 below), or they can just begin looking for special traits among the qualified candidates. They can begin to consider, not each applicant individually but collectively, in relation to other qualified applicants--kind of in the way I imagine a wine connoisseur might choose to stock her cellar. This means that admissions officials can choose one qualified candidate over another on the basis of something fairly arbitrary. Perhaps one of two candidates has an extremely rare hobby, and the admissions staff thinks that having someone with this hobby would add to the MIT undergraduate experience for everyone else, so they admit the one with the rare hobby and reject the other.

So what I'm saying basically is that, at the end of the day, it can seem like the luck of the draw whether or not you get in. That's why I tell people like you to apply to several schools--because I think it increases the chances that you'll be admitted into at least one of them.

Post continued below...
Anonymous on "English BA future in Grad School" http://forum.collegetimes.us/topic/english-ba-future-in-grad-school#post-1345 Sun, 14 Mar 2010 20:50:02 +0000 Anonymous 1345@http://forum.collegetimes.us/
Greetings scytheye and welcome.

I would recommend you sit down and ask yourself why you want to do something that requires a graduate degree in the first place. So many people are getting masters these days almost by default, and it can in fact hurt your chances at getting hired at many places if you are over-educated and under-experienced.

English, like most majors, is versatile, but grad school is designed to help professionals become more knowledgeable in their industry AFTER they are in the industry for a while. It's just gotten out of whack in recent years.

I repeat, there is no point at all to go to grad school unless you are sure what path you are going down. In other words, decide on a path, try it for a while, and after you are sure, then consider grad school. :)

P.S. all kinds of grad programs can follow an English BA besides science and math programs.
