I interned at a variety of places, from a tiny t-shirt company in NYC to the annual Prague Writer's Festival. I think all were beneficial to me; I got college credit for them, and they still (several years after I graduated from college) are listed on my resume and are often discussed in interviews at some length.

It depends of course what you are looking for: do you want a job to result directly (as in, you get promoted to a paid position) from the internship? Real life experience? Network contacts for the future? Etc. For me, all of those things and more were enormous benefits in my later life, especially as a writer/editor (right now, for example, I'm at a cool company called iGrad that actually helps answer career and finance questions for college students just like this one - go figure! - and in my interview, I focused on how useful my internships at startups were to me).

I interned three times during college; one turned into a full-time job. All were useful, both for skill-building and helpful contacts - plus, an internship can provide mentorship opportunities not available at all universities.

On the flip side, I believe people should be paid for good work, even if they are in college. Not everyone can afford to work for free, and I hope more employers acknowledge this and either offer a stipend or hourly wages to interns after a probationary period.

What's your view on the fairness of unpaid internships? To me, that's the biggest issue with them - not their usefulness, which I don't dispute. Thoughts?

Hi 151,

I wouldn't worry too much. You would be surprised how much you can turn around those dozen years you referred to. Have you considered taking some online courses that are college-level to make up for your less-than-stellar grades in school? Also, have you taken the SAT or ACT yet?

Feel free to pose this question to our forum at iGrad too. I think some of our users or editors could help you figure out the right path. Good luck to you!

Hi,

MIT admissions decisions are coming up and I'm starting to get nervous so what do you think my chances are (be as cruel as necessary)?

I'm an International Applicant and my SAT grades are:

Math Level 2 - 800
Physics - 800

Critical Reading - 800
Math - 800
Writing - 600

I skipped a year, learned calculus early in my life, I've been part of the Portuguese International Olympiads preparation team for the second year now and last year I ranked quite well at our National Physics Olympiads. And I swim quite regularly

My midyear report grades (which range from 0 to 20) are all in the 19's except Portuguese (This term was really bad and I had a <img src="http://forum.collegetimes.us/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_cool.gif" title="8)" class="bb_smilies" /> and Project Area (12).

My recommendation letters are very good

Will this bad Portuguese term affect very much my chances of getting in?

I had an interview which I think went great.

I'm sorry if the post looks like I'm bragging or something like that (I'm not) but I'm really anxious and I need some objective input (postive or negative).

Thanks

Ok, I got a lil bit of an ambitious goal here, but I'm determined so I know I can make it happen if I try.

Now for some background info, I never planned for college, I never did too well in school, I didn't have a good attitude... I was pretty Much one of the bad kids... However... I've never been slow. I get high scores on all my writing assignments.. I went to get the GED and I blew the test away in every subject except for math but I still passed that. I just didnt do as good as my other subjects. (I Know the GED is basic knowledge to survive in the real world, but still Lol... Point is, I'm above the basic.)

So now... After being in the real world for a little while, I'm realizing how right everyone was. and why I should have taken school more serious. So... I've learned my lesson, but I feel I still have time to make it better since im still only 19.

ok, So.. I live in the central Florida area.. I dont know much about college.. but from what I hear UCF is the school to be at. But I'm Not Sure How to get in.. and what kind of hell I'll have to go through to make up for the 12 years of slacking I've been doing but I'm game for it. so what I'm asking you guys is if Theres ANY kind of test or anything that could prove to this school I'm worth letting in the doors? Also, I'm not exactly coming from money either, so I'm not positive how much financial aid would cover. if at all. but thats why im here.. Any help is GREATLY apericiated. thanks for reading this.

"What is the best part of a college visit?"

My sister is doing a college search now and we stumbled across a poll that asked this very question. My opinion was exploring the campus, but she disagreed. So I decided to get more perspectives. Let me know what you think.

Hey guys,
I just started a blog as a motivation tool for myself. I thought that maybe if I start a blog I could use it as a place to report to as a means of getting to my goal of becoming a better college student. Maybe it could prove as a pick me up for anyone that is in the same boat as me in college.

If anyone has a couple minutes and could read my first post that would be great. Leave a comment if you like too. If you have anything to post on mine I will look at whatever you have to offer too. But please keep it relevant.
Becoming a better me

Thans a lot guys

There are some free websites with very helpful information for students applying to college. These sites have advice on the planning and application process, forums for students, and advice on funding your education. I've recommended some sites to teachers and students so often that I wrote up a description of the top ten most helpful sites I've found.

You can read about what they have to offer here:
soutien scolaire

I recommend you try Education Planner, which has a section on applying to colleges. Also look at College Confidential, which has an outstanding forum on College Admissions, with questions answered by students, parents and admissions experts. They also have a forum for International Students, which might be useful to you.

I wish you well in your studies here.

Hello all, I am in the middle of a career change and need help justifing a decesion. I completed a Bachelors of Political Science in 2002. Since then I have been running a fairly large construction company that I started on my own. Due to the economic situation I have closed down the business. My back up plans was always to teach US history at the high school level, as I have a Alterante Route Teaching Certificate in that subject. Not only can't I find employment as a history teacher I can not find employment at ala except substitute teaching, which doesn't nearly cover my bills, let alone have any extra money to have a life.

I have come to the conclusion that I need to better my degree to find a soild career. I have been acepted to Rutgers University for a Masters Degree in Public Adminstration. The reason I say I need help to justify my decesion is because I have decedided not to attend Rutgers. Instead I want to go back to get enough credits to teach math, and possible finish the requirements for a BS in Math. To get certified to Teach I would need 30 credits, and to complete the B.S. around 20 more.

I know this is a 180 but I feel as though a math degree will definitely get me a Teaching job, and not sure how many goverment jobs there are going to be in the future with the MPA degree. My dilema is that I feel like I am going backwards if I pursue the Math, but continuing down the wrong road if I pursue the Masters. I await your feedback.

Thanks, EG

Playing hard to get is a surefire way to convince a man he wants you. When you see a guy you like, act uninterested. Don't give in when he notices you. Acknowledge him, but no matter how much you like him, make him keep working for it. This will make him try harder. Even after you're together, you want your perfect match to work to keep the relationship going. Make him work to make you happy. His pursuit will keep both of you happy. He knows you're what he wants and you know that he wants you.

Mentally Enticing Your Perfect Match

When you engage someone mentally, it keeps them guessing about who you are. When you show that you're interested in a lot of things and that you like to learn, it makes you seem interested. It shows that you are involved in the world and that you take an interest in different things. It also keeps your perfect match guessing about the things you're interested in and he'll work harder to tell you about things that he thinks might interest you. When you challenge someone mentally, it shows that you are someone they want to spend time with because they can challenge you, too. Learn what you can about the subjects that interest you. It's good for you and for convincing your man that he's your perfect match.

Sexually Enticing Your Perfect Match

When you're dating someone, you want him to know that you enjoy sex just as much as he does. Even if you don't want to have sex with someone, you should still show that you enjoy intimacy. One way to do this is to share the fact that you have sexual fantasies with your perfect match. Sharing specifics turns him on and tells him that you will be an interesting bed partner. Other things you can do include:

• Letting him know you don't need him to enjoy yourself in bed. When a woman tells a guy that she can take care of herself, it makes him want her more because it tells him she's a sexual creature and he wants a piece of that.
• Let him know you're wearing sexy panties. Or better yet, that you're going commando. For guys, it's all about the visual stuff. So if he can imagine you wearing something sexy, or even better, that you're half-naked, half the job is already done.

If you want to convince a man that you're his perfect match, you need to show him that you are what he wants on a lot of different levels. This means being confident in who you are and meeting his needs on mental, physical and sexual levels.

JJ on "STD Prevention and Safe Sex Tips"

Being uninformed about sexually transmitted diseases (STD) would most likely be the main culprit for people being infected with diseases. Thus, reading this article would likely be your first step of prevention in acquiring those undesirable sexually transmitted diseases such as herpes, gonorrhea, HIV/AIDS and the like. STD prevention is actually quite easy, but it may require some small changes in one's lifestyle if a person's sexual activities and partners are varied.

Here are some ways in making sure that you are on alert for STD prevention:

1. Abstain from Sexual Activity: Of course this is usually more appropriate for the more prudent members of the society, or those who have actually taken a vow of chastity. Abstinence for STD prevention is quite a drastic measure to take, and may not be so realistic for most adults, especially who have committed themselves to long term partners and those who plan to have children.

2. Choose Sexual Partners Carefully: STD prevention is highly probable if one is able to really select their sexual partners. This is a very important guideline, by which people are encouraged to maintain a sexual relationship with a single partner for a long period of time. Monogamy is highly encouraged in order to maintain STD prevention. It is also a very good idea to ensure that your partner has not had any other or has not had a variety of sexual partners prior to your relationship. If this is the case, then what would be a very good step to take is to have both of you tested for any possibility of having sexually transmitted diseases. This will be necessary to prevent the spread of any possible disease from being passed on to other people, especially if a couple is thinking of creating a family in the future.

3. Engage in Safe Sex: If monogamy is too boring for your lifestyle, then the next best step to take is to practice safe sexual relations. Making sure that your partner has no sexually transmitted disease by carefully examining them, or even to the point of asking them point blank if they have been personally vigilant about STD prevention, would be an acceptable practice prior to engaging in a possibly risky sexual activity. Use of protection, such as condoms or dental dams, may be uncomfortable or may decrease the enjoyment of the sexual activity, but this will highly reduce the risk of any of you acquiring viruses of sexually transmitted diseases from your potential partners.

4. Consult a Healthcare Practitioner: If the third step was not observed, then the next thing to do is to consult a healthcare practitioner immediately after having unprotected sex. Another step involved in this is to refrain from other sexual activities after having unprotected sex, so that in case you have contracted a virus, then it would not be spread unnecessarily. This step should be taken even if one has not exhibited any symptoms of an STD. STD prevention goes beyond preventing it from happening to you, but this goes to the extent of preventing STDs from spreading to other people.

A big part of STD prevention is getting oneself tested in order to ensure that one does not have any unwanted STDs. Get tested for STD now, and be safe.

Does anyone out there actually believe this can work out well? I've definitely encountered plenty of college students who maintain "booty-call" friends and crap but I don't think these people are "friends."

Urban Dictionary says:

"Two friends who have a sexual relationship without being emotionally involved. Typically two good friends who have casual sex without a monogamous relationship or any kind of commitment."

...exactly how does someone not get "emotionally involved"...?

Leah Germain
24 January 2010
Issue: 108

As any university graduate can attest, the process of getting a degree is often a pricey endeavour. Along with tuition fees, students find themselves shelling out for textbooks and course packs that can add up to a small fortune, an average of US$900 a year in America. But BookRenter, a web-based company in northern California, is offering students an alternative to purchasing their expensive textbooks: simply rent them.

BookRenter says it can save users up to 75% when they rent their required textbooks through its online exchange. Among other guarantees, the company promises customers their textbooks are either brand new or slightly used; there are - its managers claim - millions of books available and delivery is free if the textbooks do not arrive on time.

The United States Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) has released findings suggesting an American student can spend an average of US$900 a year on textbooks, which translates to roughly 20% of the tuition fees at a public community college. PIRG also stated that since 1994, the cost of textbooks had increased at four times the rate of inflation.

BookRenter's website reports an overall growth of 300% following last September's start of the new academic year. With more than 40,000 students using the database from 5,000 campuses across the US, BookRenter has a firm grip on the US market.

"We've experienced a record year of growth by focusing on what our customers really want - selection, affordable prices, high-quality books and reliable delivery," says Mehdi Maghsoodni, BookRenter's CEO.

Launched in 2007, BookRenter has harnessed the power of new media to help communicate with its customers.

"Consumers are surprised when they discover that the majority of our team is dedicated to working with customers online via Twitter, Facebook, email and chat. We view our customer support and community team as a core pillar of our business versus seeing it as a cost centre," says Maghsoodnia.

my opinion is
• Help finding schools: Perhaps you have no idea where you want to go to college and only have a vague notion as to where it is you would like to go. Your college admissions consultant can give you many ideas as to which schools would be a good fit for you and you can then go from there.

• Help with applications: College admissions consultants know exactly what schools do and do not want to see on applications. They will be able to review your application before it is sent off to the college you are applying to and be able to tell you if there is anything that needs to be added or taken away. Beyond that they will also let you know what, if any, accompanying paperwork must be sent off with the application. Imagine how terrible it would be to get excluded from the college of your choice simply because you neglected to send in a form that you didn't even know about.

• Help with student loans: It may be necessary for you to obtain student loans in order to attend the college of your choice. Do you have any idea where to begin your search? Your admissions consultant will know exactly where to look and can even help you determine what type of aid you will be able to qualify for. In some instances they can even give you some ideas of specific scholarships that you may qualify for that you may not have otherwise found out about. While it is true that it costs money to hire a college admissions consultant, if they can provide you with ideas for scholarships that you never have to pay back it is sort of like they will be paying for themselves

No, ES is not a good match to forestry. It's much better to attend a school that has a forestry program esp for networking purposes since its such a niche field with forestry societies and what not. You will need to relearn forestry science later on probably if you waste time finishing an ES degree now. You could always get a master's in forestry, but that's kinda stupid in my opinion.
